For those who are getting into pixel mapping LEDs, your 'best friend' will be ArKaos' LED master, allowing you to output to the Kling-Net protocol.

Penrod WFX 2017

Kevin was a speaker at WFX this year in Dallas. For 2018, the conference is slated for Orlando in November. We hope to see you there.

Lighting and video have started to become so closely connected, that I thought I’d spend some time writing about a media server option and how it has worked for me.

Like many churches, I work on a budget that is definitely not the equivalent of a major concert or the Olympics, so when I was crazy to pitch the idea of environmental projection in a round room, I barely knew what I was signing up for.

ArKaos MediaMaster offers the power of a standard media server for a much smaller amount than a media server.

After some research, I thought we were going to have to rent everything, since most media servers run in the tens of thousands of dollars – an amount of money I did not have the authority to spend for this project to purchase a single piece of gear.

I was about to go to my pastor and let him know that we had to spend a lot of money to rent gear that we couldn’t own, or spend way more than I had approval for, but then I gave the search one more shot, and ran across ArKaos MediaMaster software. I couldn’t believe it. It claimed that I could load it on any computer and that it would give me all the power of a standard media server for roughly 5 percent of the cost!

Well, I decided to give it a shot, and I haven’t looked back since. ArKaos was the answer to my prayers.

It pulled off everything I needed for that year’s Christmas production, and more. In fact we now use the program on a weekly basis in a multitude of ways. ArKaos offers a few options on the purchase, which include MediaMaster Express, MediaMaster Pro, and LED Master. I ended up going with the Pro version.

My first concern was being able to manipulate the output to fit into our space, and I honestly found the geometric correction interface in ArKaos’ instant mode easier to use than the two full-blown media servers that I had used in the past.

The software gives you the ability to add or take away as many adjustment points as you want to have to make your map work, and the choice between displaying your grid, or an array of test patterns to constantly check how your map is coming together.

If you are working with multiple projectors, then you will also use the soft edge to help with your blending.
