Church Communications: Have the Basics, While Being Clear

Before we talk about communication resources and the like, though, let’s make sure we have the basics down.

If you are made aware your email has caused confusion, tension, anger or hurt feelings, follow that up with a phone call. Do not send another email to add to the thread. There is the likelihood that it will probably make things much worse.

Often Always

Don’t take for granted everybody on your team knows the mission of that team, the purpose, the reason for the mission, and can articulate it to someone else. My humble advice is to repeat why you’re doing what you’re doing at just about every formal and informal meeting.

I tell my Media team you’re not playing videos on Sundays; you’re displaying the Word of God for someone who’s never ever read, opened or seen a Bible verse in their entire life. I tell the choirs you are – oftentimes – singing the literal Word of God. That’s more important than a solo or who stands up front.

Be clear with the mission, and you never have to fall back on opinion or feelings. You fall back on what the team and leadership has decided is important.

Now that that’s out of the way…

Resources, In No Particular Order

Planning Center Online

This. Is. Everything.

I literally don’t know where I would be, without PCO. To be transparent I make no money to endorse them; the truth is I would endorse them without any compensation. They are just that good. It houses music and media, all our people, emails, mobile numbers and more.

We had an issue at our church a few weeks ago, where someone was scheduled to do something during our worship service and they never showed up for church. The person that scheduled them placed their name in PCO for a task – but that person never confirmed their participation. The scheduler called them, left a message and assumed everything was good.

Uh huh.

That’s why PCO is platinum. You can check the free app or online who has actually confirmed or not. No guessing, no phone calls, no nothing. Get PCO today. As Bridgeway’s Nikki Lerner told me “it’ll change your life!” But it only works if you work it.

Ministry by Text

My church likes to stop moving, before it begins to think about crawling. My philosophy is usually “ready, fire, aim!” See the tension?

Ministry by Text, or MBT, is absolutely correct when they say most people respond quicker by text than email. This appears to be true across age, gender, racial or any other demographic you can think of.
