Church Communications: Have the Basics, While Being Clear

Before we talk about communication resources and the like, though, let’s make sure we have the basics down.

If you are made aware your email has caused confusion, tension, anger or hurt feelings, follow that up with a phone call. Do not send another email to add to the thread. There is the likelihood that it will probably make things much worse.

We have just started paying for this service and I’ve seen an immediate impact in folks receiving messages. Other texting services include REMIND, which is free and mostly used by schools and institutions.

Survey Planet

This also has a free component, I like the look of it a bit better than Survey Monkey, and I have gotten to the habit of requesting feedback after major worship events. I created a survey after our three Easter Services, for example, asking opinions on what went well, what could be improved and more. It is easy to send out, glean responses and end. It doesn’t take long to create and can be an invaluable resource.

Doodle

When can you meet next week? Oh, I’m not available on that date, but can you do the next day? What time? Can you do it earlier? How long will the meeting take place?

Geesh, I’m exhausted already.

Doodle, also free, schedules meetings with the click of your mouse. Just select the days, times, length and send the link. You’ll get notification on when people have selected meeting options.

Brilliant!

Honorable Mentions

Jotform: An easy way to have people sign up for ministries and it can connect seamlessly to your Google Drive.

Sign Up Genius: For me it’s a little clunky, but it’s also free, and allows users to sign up for whatever you have set up for them.

My prayer is you take a comprehensive approach to what works for your ministry or church culture. It doesn’t have to be an ‘either or’ approach but a ‘this and that’ approach. Whatever approach you take, I hope it is successful. The work we do is important. The tools we use to communicate that work must be effective.

What’s on your list, that isn’t mentioned above?
