Building Material Products - Seating

Worship spaces are often multifunctional, requiring the seating to be flexible.  Chairs are perfect for varied and casual groupings, while a sense of dedicated permanence better serves more formal gatherings.

Such was the challenge addressed by SanctuaryBASICS LLC with their new Pew/CHAIR Series 1800 line.

Chairs vs pews – no longer a dilemma.  Standing alone it’s a chair, ganged together they become pews. Interlocking (ganging) in straight or curved lines, they can be affixed to the floor or positioned loose.

The design approach to the Pew/CHAIR Series 1800 line was based on the recognition that congregational seating has an impact on the ambiance of the space.

The seating, just as liturgical furnishing in general, plays an important role in supporting the activities/rituals that take place. Seating is viewed by the congregants primarily from the back, so the design details of the back should not be underplayed: E.g.  the book holders are typically boxes awkwardly attached to the back of the seats.  Often made of thin (ply) wood, they appear as an afterthought.

The Pew/CHAIR Series 1800 line incorporated the book holder as an integral part of the construction. They are not a separate item, but rather, a design element in the ‘wrap around’ of the arm’s “embrace.”

A standard shelf under the seat can be used to store a book or congregant’s personal effects. Since ’wear & tear’ is inevitable over may years of use, creating an eventual need for reupholstering.  Having the seat and back cushions easily removable allows for local servicing and/or replacement of individual pieces in the case of damage or for the entire lot in situations of interior redesign.

Variable Options: Interlocking (ganging) devices, lumbar support, adjustable spacers to create the desired radius, brackets to affix the chairs to the floor (predrilled pilot holes) The materials used are furniture grade plywood and solid wood for high wear areas (caps).  Plastic “feet” are used to protect the Pew/CHAIRS from water damage (carpet cleaning) and facilitate movement.  Standard finishes; mahogany and red oak.  Other finishes are available.
