WTD Guide to Column Speakers: Update

For some worship spaces, there may be a need for new speakers, but line arrays are deemed too obtrusive. Column speakers might be the right alternative.

Knowing that it was about three years ago that WTD had last provided a guide to available column speakers on the market, we knew it was time to once again provide a valuable snapshot into what is available to those who might be on the lookout for column speakers in their worship space.

In this six-page PDF, there is a breakdown of specifications for nine different manufacturers models, with three models coming in with price tags at under $900 per speaker, four different speaker models coming in at price ranges from between $1,200 to $2,400 per speaker, and two models that run at more than $5,500 per speaker.

The different manufacturers listed in this guide include models from Bosch, Community, Danley Sound Labs, EAW, JBL, RCF, Renkus-Heinz, Tannoy, and TOA.

As noted previously, when it comes time to decide on which model or models to consider, a good place to start would be to review the performance requirements in your church and discuss them with your AV consultant/integrator.

For churches looking to improve their sound, but not wanting speakers that might be construed as not complementary to a worship space’s decor, a viable alternative could be column speakers.

To get a sense of how column speakers can blend into your space, they are typically designed to be very tall and narrow to match a column’s dimensions. One of the nine models featured in this slideshow, the Renkus-Heinz IC7-II, was installed a few years back at the United Methodist Church in Conway, S.C., Here’s an example of how well blended a well-installed column speaker can be for your worship respace.

I have been using my University columns since the early 70’s. They are in their second building and give good coverage in a 45 X 70 room. The first install was a 60 X 100 with a balcony and the worked well there with a few ceiling speakers under the balcony
